Fishing through December 18th 2011

The fishing picked up from last weekend with some great days up to 35-40 bites per boat, then slowed down some though has picked up again the last few days with a huge body of fish coming in with a strong WSW current pushing hard a little inshore and to the east. All this may bode well for an incredible bite as the fish right now are spread over a large area, if we get some more south to the current the bottom east side of the 'pocket' may well have the fish stacked up thick on the edge in the coming days.....weeks?? Either way a good time to get down here!!!!
We just had 'The Host' Chief Tauzin down here fishing a couple of days with his assistant Allan Adamy and clients Tony Harlan, Michael Wisnienski and Jamie Primeaux.
We had a late start first day out due to some sampling of Guatemala's finest rum, 23yr old Zacapa the previous night at SAILFISH OASIS. General consensus the "best rum ever"......back to the fishing, we started at about 20NM and got into a couple of nice mahi's to ensure fresh mahi taco's for lunch.

Michael and Tony with a couple of beauties.
Soon after a couple of double headers on the sailfish had us thinking we were on them though from here it slowed down. Offshore the fleet was starting to see them consistently so we picked up and made the run. Between 1.30pm and 3.00pm we had great action out to 37NM off-shore finishing the day with 17 releases from the 28 raised with the guys doing a great job on the hook-up ratio missing just 3 fish.

Jamie Primeax with a big female before release..
Knowing where to go we ran to the spot today, as said, the fish were over a very large area, we never worked one particular area more than 30mins and had a great day getting into a couple of triple headers and several doubles, pretty much non-stop action before pulling lines in early just before 2.00pm. the difference being a few more sancochos today!!! The final tally being 41 fish raised, 35 bites and 20 releases.

Jamie and Michael enjoying the ride home in comfort.
All in all a great 2 days on the water and as I mentioned it looks like the fishing will be staying good for a while yet with such a large body of fish out there.
The general consensus was 'incredible' as far as the fishing went, the lodge received rave reviews with great food, fine wine, damn good rum and the best 'asado' or 'parilla' (Argentinian BBQ) on the last night. Jamie and Tony are already planning there next trip down here and we look forward to partying with 'The Host' over the New Year.
Happy Holidays to everyone and come down here to get into the good times yourselves.....
Cheers from Chris, Julio and Enio on ALLURE and Nick, Karina, Marlena and Carlos from SAILFISH OASIS LODGE

December 10-11th

Chris Bean (back left), Brad Lynch, 'ROD' and Frank Oberle (far right) with crew of ALLURE
Chris Bean, aka Snr Frijole usually times his trips well with exceptional bites experienced in the past few years, this year the sailfish bite was a little slower though with 4 blue marlin in the spread and 21 sails over 2 days of fishing he still timed his trip well and brought the luck. We fished him and his group of Rod, and Frank Oberle who have both been down previously and Guatemalan first timer Brad Lynch

Rods, blue marlin from Sunday 11th.
Saturday 10th we fished the east side of the pocket and the first fish of the day in the spread was a blue that crashed the right short teaser, Chris pitched the mackerel on the 50lb stand-up gear and got a great bite resulting in a solid hook-up. The blue put on a show from there on, a feisty fish of about 180lb's with the attitude of a fish twice it's size it tore up the ocean and took Chris a while to get it boat-side for the release.

Mate Enio about to release Chris's blue
There were a few blues in the area 9 released among the fleet for the day though with few sails we pushed out along the edge and got into some sailfish action with Rod and Brad getting into it some bites later in the day releasing 3 from 6 bites.

Brad and Rod with a double header
The following day Frank joined the crew and the guys were keen on getting the bites and hooking 'em. With the current coming in from the east we fished the west side of the pocket and got into some fish mid morning, a few sails missed from a little too much pressure on the drop back though at least we were getting the bites and into some fish. Later in the morning we had a small blue of about 125lb's come in hot on the long teaser, Rod pitched the 30lb gear and got a great bite and did a good job dropping back smoothly and coming tight. Another tough fish and great sport on the 30lb gear. Soon after the release we raised another bigger blue on the left short, the fish stayed deep and got the mackerel out, the fish appeared briefly behind the long rigger bait before peeling off. A couple more sailfish bites and a couple more sancochos and then another blue of about 350lbs crashed the right short, it came back up on the flat and we got the bite though unfortunately missed it. We ended the day improving our averages and getting the technique down releasing 5 from 13 bites on the sails and getting a few big dorado bites as well. A great trip with 21 sails raised and 19 bites, 4 blue marlin raised resulting in 3 bites in the 2 days of fishing.

Franks sail prior to release

Big Rod with his blue caught on 30lb test
The guys had a blast and all commented on the great accommodations and exceptional food down at SAILFISH OASIS and had a great time fishing aboard ALLURE. We had a good time fishing with them as well enjoying the banter and hope to see them back here soon.
There seem to be plenty of smaller blue marlin around right now that are great teaser fish so they'd be ideal for the fly, flyfishers.....treat yourself for Christmas.
Come down and experience it for yourself, fly or conventional fishing, get hold of us to ensure your booking as the dates are filling fast.

Thanksgiving through Dec 4th

We had a great Thanksgiving here in Guatemala, celebrating the holiday with the whole Dishman family flying down from Houston and Beaumont, Texas respectively. ALLURE share owner Hill Dishman bought his parents Annie and Jim III, wife Donelle and son Drake down while brother Jamie bought wife Cindy with kids Jim and Annie. Carol and Rihl Buckley also joined the fun with their kids Anna Louise, George and John. The early arrivals on Tuesday night were the Buckley's and Hill so they got to fish the next day while the others were flying down. And what a day!!! Great weather and the fish were snapping, we found them at around 11am on the east side of the pocket and from there on in it was non-stop with 3 triple headers and several doubles adding to the 25 from 33 bites before 2.30pm.

The Buckley's at it again with Anna Louise, John and George in the far corner on another triple header...

Anna Louise Buckley.

George Buckley.

And John Buckley with a nice bull mahi.
At around 2.30pm we had a beauty blue marlin crash the short right teaser, it turned and teased in while Uncle Hill pitched the mackerel, for long seconds the fish disappeared though returned with a great bite and perfect technique had the fish hooked solid. John took over from here on in and the big fish was tough staying down and dirty till the very end when she came up jumping. A nice one too at a solid 400lbs a great first blue marlin release for John Buckley on the 50lb stand-up gear.
Next day we had on the super sized group who braved it in rougher than the previous days conditions. Hill took out Ann and Jim III and achieved the goal for the day getting Jim who just shy of his 80th birthday released a sail and the crew just missed a 200lb marlin staying in close. On ALLURE despite the conditions we released 13 from 21 bites.

Jamie, Cindy, Annie, Jim, Drake, Donelle, Carol, John, George and Anna Louise.
The staff at SAILFISH OASIS laid on a huge Thanksgiving dinner that night for 18 that was enjoyed by all.
Friday and it was a boys trip with the rest of the crew enjoying the sites of Antigua just an hours drive from the coast and a mile high enjoying a great climate. The weather laid down for us out on the briny as well and we got into the fish once again later in the afternoon finding them on the other side of the pocket to the west. 18 from 31 today and alot of fun learning the techniques of hooking up sails on circle hooks.
Hill and Donelle stayed on for another day of fishing on Saturday 26th while the rest of the crew flew home. Staying in closer today we mixed it up and a fun day releasing 4 on the fly and 4 on the baits before calling it quits early to watch the football

About to remove the fly......
December 29th saw the local Guatemala Club Nautico host the 71st ILTTA with 30 x 3 man teams vying for top team and angler. We fished the first 2 days of the tournament and the bite was going off with 382 sails released on day one for the fleet and 313 releases on day two. There was a layday on Thursday with the tournament resuming Friday and Saturday. the fishing slowed a little the last 2 days though stayed steady with the top boat releasing 56 sails followed by 54 and 53 for second and third respectively.
December 1st-3rd Craig Johnson hosted Henry Wuertz along with Charles Wickman, Fred Herring, Todd Johnson and Steve Goodchild for 3 days of fishing on ALLURE and ADIOS. The blow continued first day out and we returned to the dock early after getting into some sail and mahi action on the morning. ADIOS went out wide the following day in search of tunas, we found the spinners though the only tuna bite for the day pulled off, a couple of nice mahi's though and 6 sails in the spread. Out to the east the last day we experienced cooler green water though on ADIOS Todd got the bite out of a nice 400lb blue and on ALLURE we got into some sail action and big mahi's for both boats.

Fred and a nice bull mahi.

An enjoyable trip all round for Henry Wuertz (far right) James, Fred Herring, Chip and Todd Johnson enjoying cocktails at the end of the day.
The latest Terrafin reports are showing the blue/warmer water coming back in and with it the fishing is sure to be going off. More reports soon.

PCCA starts off new 2011/2012 season

After a couple of months of boat and lodge maintenance we have ALLURE back in the slip and SAILFISH OASIS LODGE open for business. A successful start for both as well with great fishing aboard ALLURE and a large group of happy punters leaving the lodge after the weekend's kick off to the new season.
To start we had fishing onboard ALLURE owner Hill Dishman along with Chief Tauzin and Andre Feucht making up the team. A practice day on Thursday Nov 10th had us pushing up the eastern edge of the pocket scouting around and looking for the bite for the coming days. It was a slow start though we got into some good water and reasonable action later in the day with 11 sails raised and 5 releases from 8 bites. That evening at the pre-tournament meeting it was decided to mix things up as Hill Dishman had to fly out Sunday making points to any angler filling in for him that day ineligible. So, I spent the weekend down on the deck as an angler while Capt Hill ran the show from up top for the first 2 days of the tourny and mate Marvin Avila ran the boat on the last day.

Some of the fleet leaving out day one of the PCCA.
We got off to a reasonable start on day one notching up 5 releases before mid-day, things slowed down a little from there on in though ended with some good fishing out there with boats releasing 11-13 sails a piece and a couple of blues as well.

Andre took some time out to catch lunch on day one.
The bite picked up some on day two with boats releasing up to 16 sails, on ALLURE Capt Hill got us into some good action with 9 sail releases and a big Stripey in the 180lb range. On top of that there was another stripped marlin and blue marlin released for the fleet.
With Hill departing and Capt Marvin taking over the bite had pushed further still off-shore. Another great day out there with some boats hot and the majority releasing under 10 sails, we released antoher 9 on Allure and took some time out of the day catching more big mahi's and about 8 tunas.....

Chief with one of the 8 tunas boated for the day.
So, another successful tournament for Joan Vernon and the Guatemalan series of the PCCA with 346 sailfish, 3 blue marlin and 2 stripped marlin released over the 3 days for the 11 teams. The PCCA series raised over $25,000 to be donated to the Billfish Foundation for ongoing billfish research and conservation so well done Joan Vernon. Congratulations to Capt Chris Shedder and Team OBX on winning the Guatemalan leg and team Southern Pride for taking out the over-all Grand Champion title.
At SAILFISH OASIS we hosted 9 official observers for the tournament and 5 anglers, all had nothing but high praise for the excellent food, great accomodations and party atmosphere. Check out the new web-site www.sailfishoasissportfishing.com
Fishing for sails and marlin has continued over the last few days to be good and there is a great tuna bite as well out there. We have availability so check out the new web-site and get in touch. We are looking forward to a great season ahead!!

Not too many charters going on though with the good fishing we have been having for the few trips out I'm confident we'll be fishing more and more in June through August, September in the years to come.
We had a one day charter Saturday 6th August with local panza verde Jose Toruno organizing a trip for his brother-in-law Richard Tapp down for a few days in Guatemala from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They were joined by fellow Toruno's Jorge and Estuardo and good friends Juan Carlos Benavente and Cyril Mischler for a day of fun and fishing aboard ALLURE. The blue water was a bit further out today than the previous weekend at about 25NM off the breakwall, we found a couple of nice current lines holding small logs and trash in the blue water though surprisingly no mahi's. We did raise a couple of sailfish on the teasers though did not get a bite out of either of them before running a little to the west to a small group of spinner dolphin. Not too much going on with this group, we did see a couple of tunas though could not get a bite out of them after working the area pretty hard. From here we pushed off-shore a little and finally got into some billfish action with Cyril Mischler releasing the first sail of the day.....

Not long after Jose Toruno got into another nice sailfish which we tested out the new underwater camera on, a nice fish too of 90+lb's, in the photo you can see another sailfish free swimming in the background, try as we might we could not get the other fish to take a bait.

Next up was Richard Tapp, he has had plenty of experience catching large salmon up in Qubec though had never caught a billfish before. We raised a fish on the swimming ballyhoo in the long rigger position, the fish disappeared before coming up and disappearing again, after a long time on the turn it came up and finally ate the bait, after a good drop-back Richard came tight on a small stripe marlin jumping like crazy. It was a tough fish on the 20lb tackle and gave Richard a good work out, a nice one for his first billfish!!

Julio giving a bit of advice.

And with the results......Richard and the stripey pushing the 100lb mark. Nice fish and nice going Rich!!
From here on in Juan Carlos released a sail, another big fish.....

Estuardo and Juan Carlos with another nice sized sail
And Jorge Toruno released the last sail of the day to end with 4 sail releases from 5 bites, 8 sails up in the spread today and the stripe marlin. Add a few cocktails in the mix and the guys had a great day in beautiful conditions off-shore Guatemala.

July 29 and 30 we welcomed Chief Tauzin back down to the Sailfish Oasis Lodge this time with Guatemala first timers Dina Demboski, Kate Heiken, Elissa Ator, JP Michel and Charlie Hansen for 2 days of fishing aboard ALLURE and 3 nights down at the Oasis. With the current from the previous week pushing from the east we decided to head to the eastern side of the pocket, the good news was the blue water had pushed in to about 14NM and we started fishing at the color change. It wasn't too long before we found an area holding fish and Dina getting the skunk off the boat with this nice sail.

The sail bite was not red-hot though definitely steady with a bite every half hour or so, we stayed in the area till we got a call from a boat a few miles off-shore of us working a group of spinner dolphin loaded with yellow-fin tunas. A short troll off-shore and we were into a big group of spinners and a triple hook-up of yellow-fins on the first pass. It was non-stop and we boated 13 before leaving them for the other boats and back to sails.

Kate Heiken with her first sailfish.

Elissa and Dina with a typical sized tuna
We ended the day with 5 sails from 6 bites released and 7 raised with 13 yellow-fin tunas and one mahi of about 15lb's for Dina. A great day and night back at the lodge with plenty of variations of tuna, sashimi, rolled in sesame seed and seared.....good stuff and plenty to take back home on ice in the soft bags as well.
Our second day out we one again headed east, a bit slower today though still a great day with the highlight being JP Michel cathing his biggest blue marlin to date, a nice long fat fish all the way to the tail pushing the 400lb mark, way to go JP!!

On top of the blue the crew released 3 sails from 5 bites and boated a small mahi. A great 2 days of fishing and an equally great time all round for the party crew with Dina saying it was the best experience of her life.....

Dina, Elissa and Kate hold JP with Chief and Charlie in the back after a large day on the water.

Saturday July 23 we took out Antigua friends Cyril Mischler (France) and Javier Burga (Peru) with ALUVER associates Thomas Nielson (Denmark), Enrique Bocaletti and Guillermo Bardales from Guatemala City. Tropical storm Dora had just passed a couple of hundred miles off the coast a couple of days previous before being up-graded to a hurricane and it seemed to have stirred up the water with a clean green being the best water we found. Still we made a great day of it getting into a small group of spinners holding some good sized tunas in the 30lb-40lb range so plenty of tuna to take home, as well as a nice 25lb mahi for ceviche Peruvian style from Javier. Good stuff all round...

Cyril with a sashimi...

Thomas with another one....

Cyril and Enrique....
A good haul and another great day on the water in great conditions. We seem to be having a typical rainy season here after last years El Nino deluge with beautiful days and the rain coming in the evenings cooling things down. Perfect conditions off-shore and good fishing to boot. We are starting to take bookings for the winter months...October through next May right now with steady inquiries so don't miss out on the prime dates, get in touch before it's too late with us here to secure the time of your life....

Fishing through June 12th '11

It has been a while since the last report, though, we have been fishing fairly regularly since the last one and finally time for an up-date. All in all April was below average fishing as far as sailfish went, we had plenty of blue marlin in the spread and great days on the mahi's though all in all not your average April.....I don't think there will be any trend in this, just a seasonal glitch with La Nina and if anything I'm picking next April to be a slammer. In the meantime here is a small breakdown of what has been going on here in Guatemala with trips on ALLURE....
June 10th-12th ALLURE part owner Hill Dishman was back down for his first trip in a couple of months, once again with son Drake, and this time brother Jamie Dishman and good friend Chris Bean. First day out looking, not many boats fishing so time to cover some ground, we got into a sailfish right off the bat though carried on out the eastern edge of the pocket and then across. We raised 4 sails got 3 bites and released 2 on the eastern edge of the pocket before running a couple of miles into some spinner dolphin, a small group loaded with birds and for the last part of the day we slammed the yellow-fin tunas. With triple and quad hook-ups every pass within an hour and half we had boated 26 tunas with the first passes giving up some nice ones in the 30lb+ class.

Another triple hook-up on the tunas
We spent the last hour cleaning fish and live baiting around the spinners, surprisingly with little luck. We were hoping for a marlin bite around such great bird/bait/tuna activity and get Jamie Dishman into his fist marlin. Jamie has been coming down to Guatemala for about the last 10yrs and has experienced some incredible fishing with a few 50+ sailfish release days, plenty of mahi's and tunas and even though we had had a couple of shots at blues in the past with him it was the big one that had eluded him. On Saturday we started on the inside this time working our way up the west side of the pocket, conditions were once again great with flat seas and beautiful blue water about 85'. Little going on inside so we pushed off-shore finding another group of spinners to the west. Once again, plenty of bait and YF tunas and also plenty of skipjack's, we bridled a couple up and fished around the group for a couple of hours hoping for the bite. Nothing going on so we did some tuna fishing boating 13 YF's, a bit smaller off this group though still some reasonable ones like this one for Drake....

We started trolling back in-shore as the tunas were taking us well off the western edge. At about 9NM off the edge we ran back to the drop-off and on the second tack raised the fish we were after. Jamie was the only one of the fishing crew on deck and the fish came in hot on the flat-line teaser, it was text-book stuff, Julio teased the fish in, Jamie dropped the mackerel into position, teaser cleared and a great bite followed. Jamie did everything right, smooth drop back and locked up to come tight to a feisty 150lb blue marlin. The fish had plenty of attitude and pulled hard everytime it got near the boat giving Jamie a good scrap and a sore back to boot on the 50lb stand-up....

On the leader

And boat-side.
Way to go Jamie, the first of many more I'm sure. About 15mins after the release we continued working the edge when a bonito tuna jumped behind our right bridge teaser about 7 feet in the air landing in front of the teaser, seconds later a huge hole and a blue of about 400lbs who had been hot on his tail. The fish dropped back on to our flat line teaser, came in hot and was in the perfect position to switch to the mackerel that Chris Bean had pitched. The teaser cleared though the fish ignored the bait and went straight for the left bridge teaser, we kept the teaser away and again had the bait in the perfect spot for the switch, though that was the end of that. Plenty of adrenaline flowing on deck after that display though as hot as the fish was it did not bite the bait.....

Enjoying cocktails on the ride in...
Sunday 12th hopes were high on getting into some marlin action after the end of the previous day´s activity that we had seen. Further to the west today, more spinners, plenty of logs and bait, we released 3 sails boated 9 mahi's to 20lbs and another 7 YF tunas without even really trying though no luck on the blues....Still an excellent trip for the guys with soft bags full of yellow-fin tuna and mahi-mahi to take home, great fishing and great weather all 3 days...
May 20th and 21st Alex Donalson threw his Bachelor Party with us at SAILFISH OASIS and 2 days of fishing with friends and uncle Drew Donalson, Bobby Woodard, Dr Joe Kenneson, Scott Asher, Patrick O'Fiel, Chris Mc Afee and Jason Rea

Alex Donalson with his first sail of the trip..
The fishing was good for the 2 days out there with plenty of mahi's boated and 43 sails released between the 2 boats as well as a blue that came up on the short teaser though did not bite. The guys had a blast here with great fishing and a great time at the SAILFISH OASIS.

Enjoying drinks back at the dock after another great day on the water...
May 13th and 14th Craig Johnson, Chief Tauzin, and Carl Oliver from Stallion Oilfield Services hosted Paul Dore, Brett Pennigton, Ken Broussaro, Dan Matthews, Clint Yeager and Andy West from Murphy Oil to 2 days of fishing on ALLURE and ADIOS and 3 nights at SAILFISH OASIS.

The guys had a great first up introduction to Guatemala, we started the trip on ALLURE with a blue marlin sailfish double!! The group released 22 sailfish and boated plenty of mahi-mahi to take back home as well. It was good action with the last day out seeing good numbers of sails and some big mahi's.

This is what they had to say about their trip down to Guatemala:
Craig,

I wanted to again take the opportunity to thank you for this past weekend's trip down to Guatemala. It was enjoyed by all and I am pleased to have been party to it.

The hospitality afforded to us by yourself, Chief, Carl, Nick, Kiwi, and the entire staff down there made this trip one to remember!

I look forward to our future encounters as the comradery doesn't get much better!

With kindest personal regards,

Paul

PAUL A. DORE
General Manager, U.S. Onshore Subsurface

JR&Blaire, David&Christina, Erin&Corey
May 6th and 7th We welcomed Corey Survant back down here on his second trip back to Guatemala this season again with his wife Erin and this time good friends David and Christina Harris and JR and Blaire Turnbull. The sailfish bite was a little slow though we had a great teaser bite of a nice blue in the 400lb+ range the fish came back on the flat though did not switch to the pitch bait....soon after we raised another blue on the flat that did not stick around for long, on the sails we released 2 from 3 bites and late in the afternoon got on to a log that was absolutely loaded with as many mahi's as I have seen here. The crew had a blast breaking out the 12lb and 8lb tackle, we ended up with 56 mahi's to 25lbs in a catching frenzy for the last couple of hours of the day. Plenty of fillets to take home!! The next day out we raised 5 sails releasing 3 from 4 bites as well as Christina hooking into a blue of about 200lbs before it threw the hook.

From aft-fwd, Corey, David and JR with one of the sails....
Previous to this Anthony Blair and Billy Herbert were down with Todd Mucha and Chief Tauzin, kind of slow though the guys got into their first Pacific sails while down here, we also got into some nice mahis and watched a 500lb blue marlin chase and eat one of our 10lb mahi's attached to the 20lb class line and 80lb leader, exciting stuff!! They enjoyed every bit of their stay here at the OASIS and aboard ALLURE.
Also way back in mid-April the Phillip Evans/ Will Cravens group was in

The father and son group got into some sails and plenty of mahi action, we also raised a couple of nice blues including one of around 450lbs plus

And some first up sails for the boys.
Right now we are still having for the most part settled weather during the days with some rain in the evenings to cool things off, still plenty of blue water out there and as with this time off year plenty of tunas, mahi's along with a good shot at a blue or 2 or 3 and sailfish are here year round. ALLURE is in the water till mid-late August before we pull her for yearly maintenance. If anyone is interested in coming down we normally have settled weather and good sail bite from early-mid July though August so get in touch and we can put it all together with some good deals available.

Fishing through April 9th.....

Sabrina and Steve Goodchild
March 25th-26th Steve Goodchild took the whole family down to Guatemala for his 55th birthday party. They spent a few days in Antigua before heading down to the coast and fishing with us on Allure

The Goodchild group with Steve and Sabrina, John G, Rahey Myers, Steven Labua, Chelsea and Pascal Spengeman, Amberly G and Schroder Baker and Philip Barker.
First day out we released 5 from 7 bites on the sails and ran into the beach early to try for rooster fish, we released one before heading back to the dock.
26th we started the day on the beach and released 2 roosters including this one for Steve that put up a good scrap pulling hard on the light stuff...

Rahey also got into one of about 15lbs before we headed off shore, a bit slow today with just 2 sailfish releases though a good time had by all.
March 28th-30th we welcomed new-comers to Guatemala George Papas, Bob Ryan, Joe Meyer and Paul De Ridder. Fishing out wide on the edge the guys fished well releasing 7 sails from 10 bites. 29th the request from the crew was for some meat to take hime to we looked off the edge for the spinner dolphin, we found them late in the morning and had a great time boating 17 yellowfin tunas. With enough tuna to take home for everyone we ran back to the edge and released 3 sails from 5 bites and raised a nice blue that crashed the short right teaser though we could not get the bite on the pitched mackerel. 30th we finished the trip as we started with 7 sails released from 10 bites including this big one for the last of the trip, one of a double header...

Paul De Ridder, Bob Ryan, George Papas and Joe Meyer all had a great time down here and are looking forward to returning next year.
April 1st-3rd Hill Dishman was back down with son Drake and good friends Drew Donalson and Dan Wheat. We fished an overnighter in a quest for a swordy. After running out to the edge we came upon the first of several groups of spinner dolphin for the day. We worked them catching small yellowfins...

Drew with a typical sized tuna.
Some big sailfish...

And a nice cow mahi for Drake Dishman...

We ended up trolling down to the west to get in some good water for a night time troll and drift attempt for swordies. The day ended with 20 tunas boated 6 sails from 8 bites and Drakes mahi and another finiky blue marlin that came up around a bunch of spinners though didn't do anything. Not much luck with the swords either with no bites for the night after this sunset..

The next day started slow though we got into some good action on the 3030W corner raising 21 sails and releasing 10 from 16 bites, we also missed the biggest bull mahi so far for the year getting the bite from a big 50lb+++er around another group of spinners. Sunday the 3rd went looking to the east with not too much going on out there coming in with 2 sails from 4 bites.
April 4th-5th for their first trip to Guatemala from Beaumont, Texas we fished father and son team Mark and Zachary Smith, Kenny Locke, Joe Louoi and Harold Bodeaux. You gotta tell it how it is and today was tough, we raised a blue marlin that sat under the pitched mackerel for a long time before swipping the bait with it's bill and then leaving. Soon after we raised a sailfish that did the same thing and that was our day, we headed in early. 5th we left out early heading out wide looking for the guys first sailfish, in the afternoon we got into some reasonable action and there were 5 firsts with everyone catching their first sailfish, 5 from 8 bites for the team....

April 8th and 9th Jack and Martin Pitts came in with Roy and Patti Hefley. Craig Johnson also came in with Steve Goodchild going out wide on ADIOS looking for tunas. A bit slow though we did get into some sail and mahi action with Martin trying his hand on the light stuff pitching 12lb test with success...

Roy went out on ADIOS with Craig and Steve the last day out in great conditions they went wide and found the spinners boating 9 tunas, releasing a couple of sails and getting a couple of marlin up in the spread as well.

They are already planning their next trip back here which pretty much says it all.....Great times in Guatemala!!
